Summer 2012 – DMA179 – production blogs

Pushing over a decade of experience in the secondary education industry countless numbers of students have visited my classroom, and continued towards a career in the interactive/advertising industry. A number of years ago it was my suggestion that our Digital Media Arts program at Seneca College required a ‘creative’ class – somewhere students could practice developing abstract solution for challenges with few restrictions, few tools and once again discover. Concept and ideas spawn from some of the most unlikely sources, each student in my class is required that all work…class assignment, projects and personal is posted online – the good, bad and the ugly.   Enjoy

Raptor – paper cutout continue..

Raptor details first pass

The Raptor paper cutout project is rolling along in the Yefos basement studio, its pretty fun talking with Mason ( who will turn 8 in  few weeks ) about his thoughts on how Dinosaurs looked and perhaps lived.

He also raises a few good points how Dinosaurs are portrayed on television shows – like what you ask?

“Why do they always show the a Meat-eater Dinosaur roaring as they chase down prey? The TV nature shows that have Lions or other large predators hunting aren’t roaring as they chase a water buffalo. Why can’t they make a Dinosaur show that is more like real nature?”

Its a good point and I try to explain its done for the show, the animators adds those dramatic shots for the story and so you keep watching.

Spring 2011 – first semester students Blogs

Its that time again in the college calender, now pushing over a decade of experience in the secondary education industry countless numbers of students have visited my classroom, and continued towards a career in the interactive/advertising industry.

Back in 2004 it was my suggestion that our Digital Media Arts program at Seneca College required a ‘creative’ class somewhere students could practice developing abstract solution for challenges with few restrictions, hand full of tools and discover how analog assets could fuse with digital output .

I continued showcasing the passion for my craft, share with students my current creative direction and do my best to provide industry information and processes to our new generation of digital gatekeeper – those moments of ‘AH-HA’ and the creative passion is always there.

Raptor paper cutout

Paper Raptor - original source

Mason ( 7yr ) created this Velociraptor cut out a few months ago for a game he was making up at the shop(aka the basement). This morning when I was dropping him at school he asked if I knew where his Raptor cutout was and if I could scan it into the computer and maybe fix the feathers. This project is going to be fun maybe end up part of a larger project in the works.

Butterflies ..ya thats right

Butterflies -design book

one of the books from the event

This 4th semester class for Advance AS3 – I took a big step back from the standard class format I do need to be aware of the course goals but a number of years passed from the last time I instructed this class and it was a last minute change on my schedule to cover the summer semester.

Back to my roots of opening Flash for the 1st time and being blowing away from the works of Joshua Davis and his influence for code-based art. My goal is a rekindle this AH-HA moment this semester and let the students get back making mistakes that open the door of exploration and discovery without the fear of failing.

Varoun Maharaj 4th semester student pitch a Butterfly suggestion as topic for this semester..ya it was a joke but we know how those little things become a larger concept. This concept was cemented that night when I attended a Book/Art show at my son’s school that night. The dance of the butterflies will begin ..hahah

Comic that need to be movies

Roachmill - teaser poster concept

Self-directed poster project (18”x24”) exploring creative concept and style treatments for a fantasy dream list of Comic books that need to be awesome movies.

3D Render concepts ( field-guide project )

Dino Field-guide 3D render

3D render concept3D texture render test

The Dinosaur field-guide is shaping up and will be live at the end of the month. For a Sunday break I took an hour playing with the texture paint tool in Modo501 if you checked out my liquid tests I did a few weeks back, Modo is a pretty powerful 3D package. Yes my Liquids are just stock textures and meshes but personally when I’m learning a new software package producing something quick is my method of learning the tools.
I asked Brian Vowles a 3D modo master if he could bust me out a basic dinosaur head model based on Mason’s 2D line art I could use for some modo501 texture/paint test this so far is the result.

Rock’n tunes… \m/

Judgment night 1993

A good friend, Brian Vowles sent me a link last week for some sci-fi movie reviews, and that started a friendly email spam of good pop-corn movies from the 90’s, no digital stunt-doubles, green screen ( old school green screen that looks like a student reel ), real special effects with danger-close on set. At some point we started posting  movie soundtracks,  my tweet last week ( @andrewTedford  ) about Iron Eagle and the rocking Queen tune One Vision was the nail in the coffin -  our afternoon was pretty much shot after that.

Judgement night was one of those movie that had all the key elements for a 90’s bunch a buddies get into trouble movie. The sound track was kick ass if you are into metal and rap. A true mash-up before that term was even coined. Remember Run DMC & Aerosmith and the buzz that video had. So if you need some metal + rap from the early 90’s ..check it out the playlist on Grooveshark.
